Cameras
Local photographer and friend Ron Martinsen has a great blog with good dSLR reviews, as well as other photography equipment and software. I shoot Nikon, and I have friends who shoot Canon, and Sony and Pentax are getting good reviews for their slight more compact and powerful “mirrorless” cameras.
Waterproof cameras (and shock, dust and freeze proof) by Fuji and Olympus, and great for kids exploring photography. I recommend Fuji over Olympus due to Olympus using a weird memory card format, and for how they design the waterproof seal on the battery/card compartment. Be sure to check Costco in the spring/summer for selection at a great price.
I like Lumix for pocket cameras—compact and capable. If you want more control over your images, spend a little more and get one of their higher-end models.
